Agriculture Union Local 90004 Donates Hundreds of Pounds of Beef to Food Banks

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – Agriculture union local 90004 in partnership with the Agriculture Union and the Public Service Alliance of Canada – Atlantic Region, purchased a 1335 lbs. steer at the 67th Annual PEI Easter Beef Sale that was held on March 16, 2018.  MacPhee Meats offered their services for the meat cutting and packaging.  PSAC’s National President, Robyn Benson and Colleen Coffey, PSAC’s Regional Executive Vice-President (REVP) for the Atlantic Region attended the show and sale. The beef (808 lbs) was donated to the Charlottetown food bank and the Summerside Salvation Army.

Colleen Coffey explains the idea behind this tradition: “This is a perfect example where PSAC can demonstrate our support to local farmers and at the same time, help the most vulnerable in society by providing them with local food.  In addition, by purchasing a steer farmed by one of our own members, it directly supported the 4-H club, a community-based youth organization in PEI.  It is also an opportunity for us to highlight the important public services our members provide such as research and food inspection.’’

Agriculture Union local 90004 is comprised of 150 members who are employed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.  The Agriculture union is a Component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada which represents over 8,000 members who work for the CFIA, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Canadian Grain Commission, Canadian Dairy Commission, Public Service Commission, Department of National Defence (language training) and the Canadian School of Public Service.
