Media Advisory Public Sector Workers Organize Their Own Activity for National Public Service Week (Dartmouth, NS)

PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS ORGANIZE THEIR OWN ACTIVITY FOR NATIONAL PUBLIC SERVICE WEEK

DARTMOUTH, NS – Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) are boycotting the employer’s organized activities for National Public Service Week and will be hosting their own BBQ to celebrate the important work they do on a daily basis.

Chris Di Liberatore, PSAC member and spokesperson for the event explains why they organized the event: “This week is National Public Service Week. The government is supposed to recognize the value of public sector workers and public services but instead they keep cutting valuable public services to Canadians and attacking unions.  Instead of eating a piece of cake offered by the same employer who wants to take away our sick leave, we would rather organize our own event and discuss how we can replace this employer when we vote in the federal election on October 19.”

Background facts:

•          National Public Service Week (NPSW) was created in 1992 “to recognize the value of the services rendered by federal public service employees, [and to] acknowledge the contribution of federal public service employees to the federal administration.”

•          Bill C-59, the Budget Implementation Act that was tabled on May 7, 2015 authorizes Treasury Board to modify collective agreements to remove sick leave and impose a short and long term disability plan outside of collective agreements.  The Bill will circumvent the Public Service Labour Relations Act as well as ongoing negotiations.
