Montague Service Canada workers tell EI story to NDP Critic

STRATFORD, PEI – The Public Service Alliance of Canada will hold a public meeting with NDP Critic for Human Resources and Skills Development Canada Jean Crowder tomorrow in Stratford.

The event will present the unfolding story of the anticipated closure of Service Canada’s EI Processing Centre in Montague.  Presentations by union members, community partners and municipal representatives will examine the impact the closure will have on the community, the local economy and on key services Canadians rely on everyday.

The Union will also show how cuts at Service Canada are being mirrored throughout the federal public service.  Union representatives will be present to describe similar reductions at Veterans Affairs Canada and at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

This meeting takes place one week before the announcement of the federal budget, which the union fears will actually say very little about the Government’s plans.

The union is calling for transparency and accountability.  Today, it issued a position paper entitled “A Better Way Forward for Canadians” which asks the government to put cuts on hold pending a public review of the social and economic impact of existing cuts.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada is a national union with over 180,000 members.
