HALIFAX, NS – On International Human Rights Day, the Public Service Alliance of Canada will honour the legacy of founding member Dr. J. Calbert (Cal) Best (1926-2007). Dr. Best was an African Nova Scotian human rights and labour activist from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, the son of Dr. Carrie M. Best and Albert Theophilus Best. He was co-founder and president of the Civil Service Association of Canada, the pre-curser to the Public Service Alliance of Canada. On Tuesday, the Halifax Regional Office of the PSAC will dedicate its board room to Best’s life and work.
Dr. Best’s life is also the focus of a traveling exhibition by the Workers History Museum in Ottawa – The Cal Best Project. Tuesday’s program will include Simply the Best, a short documentary about his life.
PSAC’s Regional Human Rights and Regional Women’s Committees are proud to host the event that will be attended by the union’s National Vice-President Chris Aylward and Regional Executive Vice-President Jeannie Baldwin, as well as activists and dignitaries, including Minister of African Nova Scotian Affairs Tony Ince.
