On Friday September 13th, 74 of the 88 employees at Service Canada’scall centre in Bathurst, NB, learned their hours of work are being reduced to part-time.  26 of the 42 workers in a call centre in St. John’s, NL, got the same bad news.  The reason everyone was given for such a drastic reduction?  Insufficient funding.

The Atlantic Region of the Public Service Alliance of Canada stood in solidarity with the non-profit science advocacy group “Evidence for Democracy,” scientists, and concerned members of the public on September 16th, 2013 at the Stand Up For Science Rally in Halifax, NS. No doubt scientists would rather be doing research than rallying.

How does one even begin to honour the memory of the larger-than-life Burnley Allan “Rocky” Jones? Jones was an activist’s activist, a person of prodigious commitment and energy, who struggled tirelessly against discrimination, war, poverty and injustice for half a century.

One might have thought that coffee shops would be the last place a union organizing drive would be successful. They’re part of a low-wage service sector that has historically been resistant to unionization: small workplaces with often-transient staff.
