Nova Scotia

On December 6th, members of the local worked hard to create a float that would go in the Christmas parade in their community. The theme of the float was based around our "Think Public" campaign.  Four of the members on the float were elves making toys, and another four were Santa's helpers who wore t-shirts with the "Think Public" logo on the back.  The local distributed frisbees and bags of Think Public candy to the kids.  The float won third prize with the judges and was voted the viewer's choice float.

Members of the Halifax Human Rights Committee prepared more than 400 gift bags containing hats, mittens and socks to be donated to HRM's  homeless shelter for men and to several transition homes.  In addition, several hundred gift bags of toiletries will also be donated.

Over 150 PSAC members attended a luncheon in Sydney on December 10th to commemorate International Human Rights Day.

Over fifty members from the Atlantic Region attended the National Health, Safety & Environment Conference in Montreal on November 20 – 22, 2009.  The conference theme was “Regulate – Agitate – Enforce.”  Delegates participated in workshops on enforcement of legislation, effectiveness of joint committees, and the union’s role in dealing with the environment.  In addition, 18 resolutions were debated.

The Halifax Human Rights Committee was joined by Santa’s Little Helpers to support the campaign, Operation Christmas Child.”

The position of Federal Labour Affairs Officer (Health and Safety Workplace Inspector) in Eastern Nova Scotia (Pictou, Guysborough and Antigonish) is being eliminated.• There are over 400 worksites in Eastern Nova Scotia.• Nova Scotia has three times the disabling injuries as Newfoundland; twice as many as New Brunswick; and 20 times as many as Prince Edward Island; yet one of the three positions (the other two are located in Halifax) is being eliminated.
