Union of Health and Environment Workers (UHEW) Local 90002 is comprised of approximately 80 members who work for Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Members are mostly based at the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Centre in St. John’s, NL, with some members working at satellite locations around Newfoundland and Labrador. These members work for groups focusing on science research and ecosystems management. Members of the local provide administrative services, clerical and regulatory services, program administration, and scientific technical support. Many members conduct or support scientific research in labs, in the field, on wharves, onboard small inshore vessels, and onboard large Canadian Coast Guard vessels, contributing to a wide range of programs.
In their opinion, the main advantage of being a union member is having union support and solidarity in a dynamic work environment.
