Indigenous issues

PSAC supports all Indigenous Peoples in their struggle for full access to all human rights and fundamental freedoms. We strongly believe that those freedoms include the right to preserve and strengthen their own political, economic, legal and cultural traditions and institutions.

The PSAC National Aboriginal Peoples' Network:

  • helps our members and our union make gains and fight for the rights of all our Network members
  • was created by a 2003 PSAC convention resolution
  • invites all PSAC members who self-identify as First Nation, Inuit and/or Métis to join the network

Statement on National Aboriginal Day

June 21 is National Aboriginal Day, a day to recognize and celebrate First Nations, Inuit and Métis people in Canada.  On this day we have many reasons to celebrate and also many reasons to fight. The Atlantic Region of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) supports all Aboriginal Peoples in their struggle for full access to all human rights and fundamental freedoms. We strongly believe that those freedoms include the right to preserve and strengthen their own political, economic, legal and cultural traditions and institutions.

Brothers and Sisters,Following the resignation of the previous Director for Aboriginal Members in December 2013; I became PSAC Aboriginal Director for the Atlantic Region. I will carry out the positions’ duties representing Aboriginal members until the Triennial Atlantic Regional Convention, taking place in Saint John, NB, June 20-22, 2014. 
Support for Elsipogtog’s stand against fracking

The Atlantic Region of the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Miramichi Regional Aboriginal People’s Circle stand in solidarity with the people of Elsipogtog in their struggle to stop natural gas exploration by SWN contractors near their land.  Their bravery and their willingness to risk injury and incarceration are inspiring.
