Agriculture Union local 90004 in partnership with the Public Service Alliance of Canada – Atlantic Region, purchased a 1060 lb 4-H steer at the 68th Annual PEI Easter Beef Sale that was held on March 29, 2019. And on the Easter weekend long weekend, island residents who use food banks had the union’s Easter Beef donation waiting for them.
Taking part in this event has become part the union’s annual tradition of giving back to the community. After the steer was butchered and packaged by MacQuarrie Meats, who generously donated their services, the union donated the 530 lbs of meat to the Charlottetown Food Bank, Summerside Salvation Army Food Bank and South Shore Food Bank.
Colleen Coffey, Regional Executive Vice-President for PSAC Atlantic describes the tradition: “This is a perfect example of how our union shows support to local farmers and at the same time helps the most vulnerable in society by providing them with local food. This year’s purchase also directly supported the 4-H club, a community-based youth organization in PEI. It’s also an opportunity for us to highlight the important public services our members provide in the areas of agricultural research and food inspection.’’
Agriculture Union local 90004 is comprised of 150 members who are employed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The Agriculture union is a Component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada which represents over 8,000 members who work for the CFIA, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Canadian Grain Commission, Canadian Dairy Commission, Public Service Commission, Department of National Defence (language training) and the Canadian School of Public Service.
