Union of Listuguj Employees asks to go back to the bargaining table

Workers at Alaqsite’w Gitpu School in the Listuguj First Nation did not go on strike August 26 as anticipated.

An August 26 letter from the lawyer for the Listuguj First Nation Government clarified the Chief and Council’s bargaining position on wages for school staff.  Based on this communication, an agreement seemed closer than expected.

The Union contacted the Employer’s lawyer immediately and asked to return to the bargaining table.

The Chief and Council refused to bargain and issued a notice that they would lock out school workers on Monday, August 30.  However, on Saturday, the majority of workers were contacted by the employer and asked to report for work on Monday morning.  All 53 members of the bargaining unit are now at work.

The Union does not see the lock out as legitimate and continues to ask Listuguj First Nation Government to return to the bargaining table.
