Sisters and Brothers

As we look back upon the past year, I would like to acknowledge those who have helped us shape our Union. It is in this spirit that I say thank you and best wishes to you, your local and your families during the holiday season and New Year.

In Solidarity,

Jeannie Baldwin
Regional Executive Vice-President - Atlantic

We have had many inquiries from PSAC members about Viola Desmond Day in Nova Scotia, which is coming up on February 16th, 2015.

The third Monday in February is now a provincial holiday in Nova Scotia, similar to Family day in British-Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario. Prince Edward Islanders also have a provincial holiday in February called Islander Day – Manitobans, likewise, have Louis Riel Day.

The Conservative government is planning to introduce legislation that would allow for the conversion of defined benefit plans to target benefit plans. The legislation would affect federally regulated pensions for workers and retirees at Crown Corporations like Canada Post and Nav Canada, as well as airport authorities, among others.

The change from defined benefit to target benefit would mean that employees would not know with any certainty what their pension benefits would be in retirement.  Current retirees could see their promised benefits reduced.

On December 10th we reflect on human rights in Canada and around the world.  The day commemorates the UN’s 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

During the Regional Council meeting that was held Nov. 22-23, Council members and guests took a picture in support of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers’ efforts to Save Canada Post.  From December 2 to the 24th, we will be sharing a picture every day on social media (Facebook and Twitter) to demonstrate our support.
