Regional Executive Vice President

Colleen Coffey was elected Atlantic Regional Executive Vice-President at the 7th Regional Triennial Convention on June 24, 2017 in Saint John, NB.

An active PSAC member for over 20 years, Sister Coffey first began her union activism with the Goose Bay Women’s Committee and entered into a long pay equity battle. She was workforce adjusted in 1998 and moved to the Airforce Base in Greenwood, NS. After re-establishing herself and her family, she got involved in her union local and held many roles from Secretary, Treasurer, Shop Steward, Chief Shop Steward and finally President for the past 12 years.

She held a seat on the PSAC Atlantic Council for three terms and was elected the Alternate REVP for those terms.

Sister Coffey was elected to be the female PSAC Representative on the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour Executive Council and held this seat for several terms until she was elected the Female Vice President at Large that she maintained for two terms.

National Public Service Week 2020

PSAC members have been on the frontlines of this pandemic, committed to delivering critical government services for Canadians everywhere. You went above and beyond and continue doing so in order to provide essential public services to Canadians during these difficult times.

Let’s see if we got this right: there’s a global pandemic and various levels of government are urging the population to stay at home and whereas possible, to work from home in order to flatten the curve and protect our economy as much as possible. Thousands of public sector workers continue to show up to their workplace and some adapt and work from home as they are deemed essential service. Thousands more volunteer to transfer to a new position in order to deliver essential benefits created by the federal government.

Support for women who work in transition houses

May 14, 2020 RE: Support for women who work in transition houses Premier McNeil, We applaud the federal government’s announcement to cost share wage tops-ups for critical front-line workers in the province. The challenge will be in ensuring that every front-line worker receives this well-deserved raise. All front-line workers are placing their own health and safety at risk in order to protect ours and that needs to be recognized.

Sisters, Brothers and Friends, As I sit down to write this letter to you, PSAC members, I can’t help but feel grateful for all that you do on a daily basis. I’m proud to say that I work for PSAC members just as you are proud to work for Canadians. We deliver so many essential services to Canadians in various different capacities and we can and should be proud of that.

Nova Scotia shootings: Statement from Colleen Coffey, PSAC Atlantic Executive Vice President

Following the unprecedented tragedy that took place in Nova Scotia over the weekend, words cannot describe what many in Nova Scotia and across Canada are feeling. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, first responders and law enforcement personnel, as well as all the residents of the affected communities. Your shock and pain are shared by many. As a union with thousands of members employed as front-line officers in law enforcement, our hearts go to the entire community as you deal with the shock and pain of this weekends’ horrific violence.

RECAP: 4th Year Anniversary of Phoenix

PSAC members in the Atlantic region highlighted the 4th anniversary of the Phoenix pay system and earned unprecedented media coverage. In Miramichi, members paid a respectful visit to the Member of Parliament for Miramichi – Grand Lake, Pat Finnigan. At the same time, approximately 75 members rallied at the main pay center in Miramichi. This demonstration was in no way directed at our PSAC/GSU members working at the Pay Center, to the contrary, this should have been seen as a show of support for the excellent work they are doing despite a system that is not working properly.

Celebrating the power of our labour!

This coming Monday is a holiday when all workers are invited to celebrate the power of their labour. On this day, we have an opportunity to participate in several events marking Labour Day or simply spend time with family and friends. I am proud to advocate for a union that strives to improve working and living conditions for all Canadians. On this day, may we remember the battles we fought and be mindful of the struggles still ahead to achieve fairer working conditions.

Solidarity with the Muslim Community in Christchurch, Solidarity in the Fight Against White Supremacy and Islamophobia

Our hearts break today in learning of the horrifying murders in New Zealand. On behalf of PSAC members in the Atlantic Region, I would like to extend our solidarity to Muslim communities everywhere, especially in Christchurch. But our rage also grows today and so does our determination to confront, call out, dismantle and disempower white supremacy. Unions everywhere must be leaders in this urgent fight. We encourage members to attend vigils in your communities and to offer support where you can.

Solidarity with New Brunswick Nursing Home Workers

As many of you may know, there is a possibility of a strike by roughly 4100 workers at 46 New Brunswick nursing homes. I am writing to ask that you support these workers in their fight for fair and respectful working conditions. On March 7, 90% of workers voted in favour of strike action, rejecting an offer from the New Brunswick government that would keep them overworked and underpaid. On Sunday, the Government of New Brunswick obtained a court order suspending their right to strike for 10 days and undermining these workers’ labour rights.

Let me tell you that it was an almost impossible task to select dates that weren’t going to create a conflict with other events within PSAC and its Components and DCLs. In addition to that, I also had to consult Erin Sirett, Regional Coordinator, to discuss the staffing aspect of these conferences.
