Women

From the time equity issues were first raised in the 1970s, through the CR strike of 1980, to the creation of regional women's committees, women in PSAC have been pushing for equality both within PSAC and in society in general. The PSAC Women's Program organizes conferences at regional and national levels, develops campaigns and initiatives on issues related to women's equality.

Women make up more than half of the PSAC membership. Regional Women’s Committees (RWC) were established in the mid-1980s to further address women’s issues and concerns such as the systemic discrimination and barriers working women face within and outside their workplace. These committees provide important forums to strategize for positive change in women’s lives.

Dear Sisters and Brothers, Although we need to celebrate the many achievements made towards equality, there remains a lot of work.  To this day, women are being denied equal pay for equal work and they are subject to discrimination and threats when they hold positions of power.  We can look in our own country where Alberta Premier Rachel Notley faces threats on a regular basis – because she’s a woman. Regardless of political affiliation, religious belief or even sexual orientation, women should be treated equally, period! Take action

Sisters and Brothers, Please find in attachment a letter I sent to the female MPs in our Region in regards to child care.  Our members are directly impacted by the high cost of child care and year after year, resolutions are adopted at our Conventions urging our Union to take concrete steps in working towards quality affordable child care system in Canada.

The annual International Women’s Day event of the PSAC that takes place in the Halifax Regional Municipality on March 8th, will not be held this year in March due to lack of a suitable and large enough space to hold the event.    However, keep your calendar open as we are planning to have a celebration of women’s achievements in October which is Women’s History Month in Canada.     More information will follow in the coming months.   In solidarity,   Janice Grant
