Committee Success Story: Regional Women's Committee Networking Weekend

Our Area Councils and Regional Committees (Women’s, Human Rights and Young Workers) were faced with quite the challenge these past few months. How do you operate in the midst of a pandemic? Well, they certainly adapted and continued their important work! The Committee Success Stories is designed to highlight the successful work accomplished by our various committees in the Atlantic Region.

The Rocky Harbour Regional Women’s Committee organized a phenomenal weekend of networking and workshops on Saturday September 19th and 20th. Eight PSAC women took part in the event held at the Rocky Harbour Pioneers 50 + Club.

Various topics were covered such as:

  • Achieving Balance
  • Allies
  • Black Lives Matter-Viola Desmond story
  • Child Care
  • Color it Up- Healthy Eating- Three Sisters Soup
  • Domestic Violence
  • MMIWG & T & R/Orange Shirt Day
  • Women Helping Women
  • Famous Woman- Local Woman, Ella Manuel

Presenters included:

  • Sister Mary Shortall, Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour President
  • Sister Corina Harding, PSAC Regional Representative
  • Sister Starlynn Shears-Osmond, Victim Services Coordinator, Department of Justice, Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Sisters Bonnie Lou Hutchings & Phyllis Osmond – Rocky Harbour RWC Members
  • Sister Leanne Moss- PSAC Atlantic Young Workers Director/National Indigenous Peoples’ Circle Atlantic Female Representative
  • Angela Decker- Rocky Harbour RWC Chair, Newfoundland and Labrador Women’s Director

One of the highlights was a fun evening workshop that consisted of crafting a paper lotus flower which we put a message inside related to our workshop and set afloat, alight, in the water.

Sister Decker, Rocky Harbour RWC Chairperson, sums up the event: ‘‘It was refreshing to spend time with other sisters, to network, and discuss various important topics that affect us all differently. It was an empowering weekend. We might have to do our work slightly differently because we are in a pandemic, but rest assured, nothing will prevent women from organizing and keep working toward change.’’
