This February, we celebrate Black History / African Heritage Month. The contributions made to society by our Brothers and Sisters from the Black/African communities have made our country a better place to live. Not only have they shaped our nation, they have shaped our own Union as dedicated members and committed staff members. We honour all of those who contributed to PSAC’s success, such as Brother Cal Best. Our boardroom in the Halifax Regional Office is dedicated in his name to remind us every day of the important contribution made by our racially visible members.

Sisters and Brothers,
I have personally sent a letter to every MP in our Region in regards to Bill C-27. I strongly encourage you to send our template letter to Bill Morneau, the Minister of Finance, telling him that Bill C-27, an Act to amend the Pension Benefits Standards Act, is an attack on the retirement security of workers.

The Atlantic Region of the Public Service Alliance of Canada and our 18,000 members across the region hereby request that you immediately appoint an Industrial Inquiry Commission under section 73 of the Trade Union Act. As evidenced by this year-long strike, the owners of the Chronicle Herald and their workers need balance in trying to reach a tentative agreement.

Monday, January 23rd marks the one-year anniversary of Chronicle Herald strike. The NSFL continues our boycott of the paper; we will not advertise, submit press releases, or give interviews to the Herald until the strike is over.
In the meantime, we’re reading Local XPress, the online news service started by the Halifax Typographical Union (HTU).

As we look back upon the past year, I would like to acknowledge all PSAC members who have defended the values and principles of PSAC; bargained on behalf of our membership and therefore shaped our Union. It is in this spirit that I say thank you for your continued support and dedication to our amazing Union, Sisters and Brothers. Best wishes to you, your local and your families during the holiday season and New Year.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada is pleased that Canada will honour a leading civil rights activist by featuring Viola Desmond on the new $10 bill. CBC described Desmond’s legacy this way:
In 1946, nine years before Rosa Parks historic bus ride in the U.S., Viola Desmond sat in a section of a Nova Scotia movie theatre that was reserved for white people, rather than the designated area for black people upstairs. A police officer arrested her and she spent the night in jail charged with not paying a tax of three cents for a downstairs ticket.

We cannot sit by and do nothing. Our teachers and our students deserve better. Let’s tell Premier Stephen McNeil that he is failing this province.

Sisters and Brothers,
The Liberal government recently introduced Bill C-27, An Act to amend the Pension Benefits Standards Act, 1985. This bill will allow for the creation of target benefit pension plans and is an attack on retirement security. The Conservatives threatened this type of legislation, but now the Liberal government is actually pursuing it.
