Area Councils

Area councils are political fora for the PSAC in the region.  They allow discussion, collaboration and activism across Component lines and Directly Chartered Locals (DCLs).  Area Councils are recognized in the PSAC Constitution and their delegates have voice and vote at PSAC National Conventions and the right to submit resolutions to both PSAC National and Regional Conventions.   These bodies are given status by the PSAC through the Regional Executive Vice-President.

To form an Area Council, three Locals from different Components/DCLs must make an application to the PSAC.  Locals must pass a motion of this intent at a Local membership meeting. These Locals must be in a geographical area that will allow meetings to be held at least four times a year.  A letter of this intention must be mailed to the Regional Executive Vice-President and to your Component/DCL.  Once the required three letters are received, the REVP will establish the Area Council. Start up and operational grants are available and the Area Council may decide to charge an affiliation fee.

Thank you to our regional committees who worked tirelessly in December in order to support society’s less fortunate. Lynette Robinson, on behalf of the NS Area Council 1, delivered a donation of socks, mitts, gloves, coats, and various other items to the Phoenix Youth Shelter based in Halifax, NS on December 17, 2020. Phoenix was the only organization accepting this kind of donation in the Halifax Regional Municipality. More information about this organization is available at phoenixyouth.ca

Our Area Councils and Regional Committees (Women’s, Human Rights and Young Workers) were faced with quite the challenge these past few months. How do you operate in the midst of a pandemic? Well, they certainly adapted and continued their important work! The Committee Success Stories is designed to highlight the successful work accomplished by our various committees in the Atlantic Region. **

The PSAC Greater Moncton Young workers Committee, Women's Committee, Human Rights Committee and the Area Council are all coming together to work on three different projects to make a difference for the less fortunate people of our region.  The Pandemic and the winter coming are certainly not easy for some of them and we are hoping to do a small difference.

Committee Success Story : Pride in Greater Moncton Under normal circumstances, the PSAC Regional Committees in the Greater Moncton Area would get together and participate in the pride parade. Given that it wasn’t possible this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the members of the Greater Moncton Human Rights Committee thought it was even more important to play a role in support of the LGBTQ2+ community.
