Human rights

The PSAC Human Rights Program is based on a mobilizing approach, rather than an advocacy approach. This means that the union provides support to members from equity groups to discuss, identify and strategize around how to best address issues of particular concern to them.

PSAC Social Justice Fund (SJF) invites your members to participate in the next Education In Action project in Guatemala for 2 weeks in spring, March 6 - 20, 2015. The Education In Action (EIA) organization is supported in part by the PSAC Social Justice Fund and engages Canadian volunteers to deepen their understanding of Guatemala and to build solidarity with Mayan communities in Guatemala.

The PEI Health Care coalition together with the Trinity United Church held a fundraiser lobster dinner on August 28th, to raise funds for an immigrant family. Jeannie Baldwin, REVP Atlantic joined PSAC members at the fundraiser.

Some PSAC members from AGR, GSU and UNE along with the PSAC Atantic REVP and the newly elected GLBT director on the Atlantic council participated in the Moncton Pride Parade on August 23, 2014.

All PSAC members are invited to join the PEI Federation of Labour on August 2nd to walk in the Pride parade. We will meet at 12:00 noon in the parking lot of the Sullivan building near Victoria Park in Charlottetown - look for the PSAC flag. See attached poster for additional information.

May 17th is recognized as International Day against Homophobia.  Even though rights for the GLBT community has improved, we still have a long way to go.  People should not live in fear because of their sexual orientation or sharing their love for one another in public.

In Nigeria, more than 200 girls have been abducted.  The girls were allegedly abducted to prevent them from attending school.  Join the social media campaign: download the attached document, take a picture and share it on Facebook and Twitter using #BringBackOurGirls

The Canada Border Services Agency discriminated against a PSAC member on the basis of his age, race and perceived obesity, thereby preventing him from securing permanent employment.

On March 21, 1960, 69 black demonstrators were killed and 180 were wounded by armed white South African police in the Sharpeville Township. More than 700 shots were fired at black demonstrators who were peacefully protesting the country’s discriminatory laws.

At PSAC, we support local pride organizations such as Halifax pride. We were proudly represented at Halifax Pride's annual fundraising event: 'Fancy Gay Dress Party'.
