Human rights

The PSAC Human Rights Program is based on a mobilizing approach, rather than an advocacy approach. This means that the union provides support to members from equity groups to discuss, identify and strategize around how to best address issues of particular concern to them.

My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of those killed or injured in the brutal attack at Pulse Nightclub, a gay bar in Orlando Florida. The 2016 PSAC-Atlantic Racially Visible Members Conference will be held September 23, 2016 at 9 a.m. through to September 25, 2016 at 12:00 noon in Halifax, NS.  The theme for this Conference is: ''Race Forward: Our Union, Our Community, Out Future!''  Registration deadline: May 20, 2016.   The objectives of the 2016 PSAC Regional Conference for Racially Visible Members are: • To discuss, strategize and mobilize on issues impacting Racially Visible Members in their region;

PSAC-Atlantic and the Social Justice Fund invite PSAC-Atlantic members with a deep commitment to international social justice to apply to be a part of the Breaking the Silence delegation traveling to Guatemala this year from April 30 to May 13, 2016. The delegation is organized by the Tatamagouche Centre.   Please submit your applpication to Sébastien Bezeau (bezeaus@psac.com) by February 25, 2016.

The PSAC Area Council1 & the Halifax Human Rights committee were please to host Francisco Ramirez Cuellar (right).  Br Cuellar is a labour lawyer from Columbia who has survived 8 assassination attempts in his defense of trade union and human rights in Columbia.  Francisco and his interpreter Sarah Wilbur (left) spoke at a meeting of trade unionists at the Cal Best Boardroom in Halifax recently urging all present to assist in their efforts to boycott Drummond coal, suppliers to both Nova Scotia Power as well as New Brunswick Power.
