Human rights

The PSAC Human Rights Program is based on a mobilizing approach, rather than an advocacy approach. This means that the union provides support to members from equity groups to discuss, identify and strategize around how to best address issues of particular concern to them.

Regional Human Rights Committees play an active role in the education of members, employers and communities about human rights issues.  They act as a resource to members on human rights issues, as well as a hub of activism.  These committees are established in accordance with Section 15 of the PSAC Constitution which enables the establishment of regional equity committees representing any of the four equity groups, or human rights committees, representing all of the four equity groups.

May is Asian Heritage month, a month when we celebrate the contributions workers from East Asia, South Asia, Central Asia and Southeast Asia have made to our communities and to our union.  This month we also reflect on the sacrifices generations of Asians Canadians have made in this country and the adversity they have overcome.  Celebrations will take place during the month of May, as will discussion and debate around finding collective solutions to end systemic racism.

Our hearts break today in learning of the horrifying murders in New Zealand.  On behalf of PSAC members in the Atlantic Region, I would like to extend our solidarity to Muslim communities everywhere, especially in Christchurch.  But our rage also grows today and so does our determination to confront, call out, dismantle and disempower white supremacy.  Unions everywhere must be leaders in this urgent fight.  We encourage members to attend vigils in your communities and to offer support where you can.
