ST. ANDREWS, NB  - Leaders of the largest federal public sector unions are in St. Andrews, New Brunswick today to join a groundswell of opposition to federal cuts at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ St. Andrews Biological Station.  The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada’s (PIPSC) National President Gary Corbett, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) National Vice-President Chris Aylward, and the Union of Environment Workers (UEW) National President Todd Panas joined politicians and experts in marine science at a town hall event at the Fundy Discovery Aquarium Wednesday evening.

ST. ANDREWS, NB - Save Ocean Science (SOS), a recently formed group of non-partisan citizens in St Andrews and surrounding areas, is hosting a panel discussion in St Andrews.  The event is an opportunity for the public to learn about the impact of the significant cuts to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Science. It is also an opportunity for the public to show support for the work being carried out at the St Andrews Biological Station (SABS) and other DFO research facilities.

CHARLOTTTETOWN, PEI– A working group made up of the City of Charlottetown, the Public Service Alliance of Canada, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada and the Government of Prince Edward Island has released a report they commissioned into the scope and impact of potential federal job cuts on Prince Edward Island.The study, completed by McInnes Cooper, was launched in February 2012, at a time of widespread speculation about the volume of federal cuts. The key findings of the report are as follows:

JOHN’S, NL - Almost sixty Post Doctoral Fellows who work at MemorialUniversitywill form a separate bargaining unit of Lecturers’ Union of MUN (LUMUN), a Directly Chartered Local of the Public Service Alliance of Canada.  Yesterday, the Newfoundlandand Labrador Labour Relations Board counted ballots from a certification vote.

NEW BRUNSWICK– For the next month transit signs in three New Brunswick cities will highlight why Service Canada simply can’t handle any more cuts. Bus signs in Fredericton and Saint John, and transit shelter signs in Moncton will call on clients of Service Canada experiencing prolonged wait times to contact Service Canada’s Office of Client Satisfaction. Until recently the office’s toll-free number was withheld from clients.

HALIFAX, NS– At a series of ratification meetings held Thursday, April 12, Commissionaires who work at Halifax’s Stanfield International Airport voted to accept a tentative agreement reached between the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the employer, Commissionaires Nova Scotia.
