On December 6th, members of the Greater Moncton Human Rights committee attended the Moncton Candlelight Vigil marking the National day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women.
Sisters Lorraine Gallant and Stephanie Scott and Farid Tourkmani attended this ceremony on behalf of the committee and handed out a cheque of $100.00 to Kathy Leger who will coordinate the distribution to the Violence Prevention Centre at Serenity House, Saint Anne de Kent NB.

To highlight the International Human Rights Day, once again members of the Greater Moncton Human Rights committee came together to volunteer at a local based soup kitchen this year. They spend the day helping out at the Karing Kitchen to prepare and serve lunch to members of the community at no cost. «Karing Kitchen is about "providing a nutritious hot meal, ensuring food security and advocating for a person's rights and responsibilities.» says Coordinator Melissa King.

Please take the time to add your signature to petition E-1833 which calls upon the Government of Canada to:
(a) enact legislation banning conversion therapy to minors in Canada;
(b) enact legislation prohibiting transporting minors outside of the country for such purposes; and
(c) have conversion therapy included in the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code, to protect children from abuse.

The Greater Moncton Regional Women’s Committee and PSAC donated $1000 to the NB Coalition for Pay Equity at their Annual General Meeting which took place on November 28th.
The Greater Moncton RWC also elected its new executive, which are:

Anthony Valles, member of the PSAC Greater Moncton Human Rights committee saw an opportunity to invite other PSAC members of the Moncton region to participate in his CFIA workplace project when they organized the 12 days of Christmas. A collection of items (non-perishable food and personal care items) to be given to the Food Depot Alimentaire to be distributed to those less fortunate in the community.
At his request, collection boxes were placed in the PSAC office and many members of the area responded very well to his invitation.

When the CUPW rotating strike hit the Moncton region, some of our PSAC members were out in support. André Lévesque, member of our DCL CHEA local 60200 and Chair of the Greater Moncton Young Workers Committee and Isabelle Forest, member or UHEW local 60727 and Chair of the Greater Moncton Area Council were out on the line in support and solidarity with hot beverages and donuts!

Colleen Spurvey, chair of the St. John’s Regional Women’s Committee (RWC) presenting a cheque of $485 to Planned Parenthood. These funds were raised at the International Women’s Day Luncheon organized by the RWC.
