Union Celebrates Legal Victory Against the University of New Brunswick

HALIFAX, NS – The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) is celebrating a legal victory following a decision rendered by Justice Paulette C. Garnett on April 7, 2017 in the Court of Queen’s Bench of New Brunswick between the University of New Brunswick and PSAC.

The PSAC Cape Breton Regional Municipality Area Council laid a wreath to recognize brothers and sisters who were killed or injured on the job at the April 28th Day of Mourning ceremonies in Sydney.  Laying the wreath on behalf of President, Br Steve Purcell was Br Brent Duff joined by Br Michael Morrison.

Sisters and Brothers,

On May 9, 1992, an explosion at the Westray Mine in Pictou County, Nova Scotia killed 26 miners working underground.  It was one of the deadliest mining disasters in Canadian history and led to new Criminal Code provisions – known as the Westray Law – that made it possible to prosecute corporate criminal negligence.

You can find below information in regards to the event taking place on May 9 at the Westray Miners Memorial Park.

Sisters and Brothers,

National Public Service Week (NPSW) will be held June 11-17, 2017.  The event marks the importance of federal public service employees and to recognizes their service to Canadians.  Because the employer cannot pay its employees on time and accurately, we are asking our members to boycott NPSW.

PSAC members proudly serve Canadians on a daily basis.  Our members deserve more than a piece of cake - if the employer wants to show their recognition for our members' valuable work; they should do that by paying them in full and on time.

Laurie Ann Wesselby (USGE 60128 and VP of the Greater Moncton Area Council) and Bernard Simard (USGE 60142) attended the ceremony organized by the Moncton District Labour Council to lay a wreath in memory of the workers who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness on the job.
